What are the top 10 wonders of India?

India has a rich cultural heritage with vast history and diverse land forms. It is not easy to pick up 10 wonders from such large number of wonders that India proudly houses. I have tried to compile a list of Wonders of India picking monuments from all across the country. This list only comprises of Monuments, though there are various natural wonders also in India.

  • The first one on the list has to be the Taj Mahal, Agra. Built by the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, it houses the tomb of his favorite wife Mumtaz Mahal. Constructed in ivory – white marble, on the banks of river Yamuna, many believe this monument to be the “Monument of Love”.
  • Ajanta and Ellora Caves : Located in Maharashtra, these caves feature paintings and rock – cut sculptures which are one of the finest examples of Indian art.
  • Nalanda Mahavihara: One of the oldest university in the world, it engaged in the organized transmission of knowledge over an uninterrupted period of 800 years.
  • Hampi : Charismatic even in its ruined state, it is an ancient temple town and was the capital of the ancient Vijayanagara Kingdom.
  • Sanchi Stupa : Remarkable specimen of Buddhist art. The foundations of this religious centre was laid by Emperor Ashoka.
  • Jaisalmer Fort: One of the largest fully preserved fortified cities in the world. The yellow sandstone walls fade to a golden shade as the rays of setting sun fall on them. For this reason, it is also known as the Sonar Quila or Golden Fort.
