Why birth certificate is required

The birth certificate plays a crucial role especially when you are applying for admission in schools or college, hospital benefits and more. It also helps in establishing property and inheritance claims

Online registration of birth certificate

Since obtaining a certificate is usually a tedious job, many states have now relaxed the features and even allow you to apply for the birth certificate online. In Bangalore, BBMP’s unit Bangalore One is one centre where you can apply for the certificate online.

Now parents need not worry about the tedious task of getting birth certificate of their newborn as city-based government hospitals have come up with a round-the-clock service, under which birth certificates are issued within 24 hours of the delivery.

The system of providing round-the-clock birth certificates was started in February 2013 by the UT health department and till now about 5,000 birth certificates have been issued at the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital,Sector 16.

Director (Health Services) Dr Rajiv Vadera says, Earlier, getting birth certificates used to take several days and was a very inconvenient task for the general public, who had to visit the place again and again. But with the new facility, patients are getting birth certificates within 24 hours only. Further, the system provides correction of certificates,if any,on the spot.

He adds that for the convenience of patients, the facility is provided at all the health institutions of UT in the city, including Civil Hospital of Manimajra, and at the Government Civil Block Hospital in Sector 22.

Explaining the process, nursing incharge Eileen Chand says, We have assigned the task of taking birth notes to specific nurses. They update the birth register daily; one nurse takes down the details of the patient post-delivery and another sister cross-checks the details. Then comes the role of data operator who fills out the birth details on computer. Again the data is checked by a sister. Lastly, the doctor on duty and data operator verify the details and print-outs of birth certificates are taken.

She says, The department members visit the private and neo-natal wards where patients are admitted with their newborn. After verifying the details, they hand over the birth certificate to mothers in the ward only.

The entire system is computerised and is very fast and accurate,as it involves several checks. Earlier, pharmacists were there instead of data operators. They used to take about one week to submit the birth certificates. It was very inconvenient for patients as most of them were from far-off places, Eileen adds.

The patients are happy with this facility. I delivered a baby in the morning, and by afternoon the staff members gave me the birth certificate of my child. It is very convenient and a good service by the health department, says Mamta,a new mother.

Another patient,Anita Raj from Vikasnagar, says she gave birth to a baby girl on the night of July 10,and received the certificate on the morning of July 11.

Sunil Kumar,a family planning worker, says, After one month, when the name of the newborn is decided, the parents are required to register with the birth and death department.
